Protectoria patent granted by the US Patent & Trademark Office

Experiencing the need for more automated security verification, Protectoria have patented a mechanism designed to (1) find secure devices (end-points and servers) and (2) to evaluate their (security) protocol compliance and strength.
The inventor, Trond Lemberg, states that the mechanism can generally be used for automatic testing and verification of different IP-based protocols both on the network and application layer. The mechanism can provide compatibility information with network and application standards. Moreover, the security strength for a given protocol can be detected by mapping to user’s security requirements for the given protocol. Subsequently, a service might be delivered on the basis of such pre-declared information.

Protectoria will use the patent mechanism internally for more efficient provisioning of new customers and message relay delivery to random recipients. This is done through discovery and test of server’s security settings on receiving servers. A third option also under evaluation is to offer the mechanism as a service to companies who need to test server settings for integration purposes (i.e., automatic protocol and security testing of server configurations ‘in the cloud’.)
